Canada?s Rogers officially outs its 2-year Share plans

We?ve told you that Rogers will unveil its new two-year plans on August 9th, and voila ? they?re here now. As expected, these look very similar to the plans announced by Bell and TELUS, asking for a base price including data for the first customer, with an additional $55 for each additional smartphone.

All plans come with unlimited Canada-wide calling, unlimited texting, basic call display, voicemail and video calling. For $85, users get 1GB of data; $105 gets you 3GB, $120 ? 6GB; and $140 comes with 10 gigs of data.

Users are free to add an already-owned tablet to their Rogers data pool for an additional $10 per month.

And there you have it folks. All major carriers in Canada are now offering 2-year share plans, making it a new reality in the country. No longer will you be asked to put your signature on a way-too-long three-year contact?

London Day 6: St. Paul?s Cathedral ? Part 2

After the guided tour, I went on to climb up to the Dome. Ben had done that before and he hated the narrow stairways up.

He dropped me at the first level and waited there while I climbed up by myself. It was a windy day.

View of the Millennium Bridge from St. Paul?s Cathedral with Tate Modern at the south end.

These were the narrow spiral stairways that Ben did not like.

View of the towers with clocks from the dome.

The towers were not in the original design but added in 1707 when Wren was 75 years old.

Twitter could compete with traditional polls in future elections

The Verge writes, According to researchers at Indiana University, the link between tweets and votes in political elections could be stronger than once thought. In a study analyzing 537 million tweets from August 2010 ?the largest sample of tweets ever accessible to academic researchers ? the percentage of votes for Democratic and Republican candidates in the House of Representatives race correlated with the percentage of tweets that mentioned them. The interesting part is that it didn't seem to matter if the surveyed tweets were positive or negative. "We call this the 'all publicity is good publicity'?

California murder suspect killed in Idaho, teen girl rescued

James DiMaggio -- the California murder suspect who allegedly kidnapped 16-year-old Hannah Anderson -- was fatally shot Saturday by an FBI agent in the Idaho wilderness, authorities said.

SALMON, Idaho ?

?A?California?fugitive suspected of killing a longtime friend and her son and kidnapping her 16-year-old daughter was shot dead in the remote?Idaho?wilderness by an FBI agent on Saturday and the girl rescued safely, law enforcement officials said.

James?Lee?DiMaggio, 40, was slain by an FBI agent while authorities were attempting to take him into custody at Morehead Lake in the rugged?Frank Church?River of No Return Wildnerness,?San Diego County?Sheriff?William Gore?said at an afternoon news conference.

The girl, Hannah Anderson, was found with?DiMaggio?at the lake, about 90 miles northeast of?Boise, and rescued by authorities apparently in good health. She was taken by helicopter to an?Idaho hospital?and will be reunited with her father as early as Sunday.

"Hannah is safe and that's the best outcome we were hoping for, our top priority," Andrea Dearden, spokeswoman for the?Ada County Sheriff's Department, told reporters at a separate news briefing inCascade,?Idaho, just outside the wilderness park.

Mary Rook, spokeswoman for the FBI's Salt Lake City office, said?DiMaggio?and the teen were spotted by agents with a special hostage rescue team at a campsite near the lake at about 7:20 p.m. EDT.

"Agents moved in to rescue Hannah and the suspect is deceased," she said.

Rook declined to provide more details of what she called a "very challenging situation" pending an investigation of the incident by an FBI shooting review team. It was not immediately clear if?DiMaggio?fired on the agents but there were no reports of law enforcement officers injured in the operation.

"Now that Hannah is safe and being evaluated in a medical facility, FBI victim specialists are working with Hannah and her family to get them the resources they need as they enter this next challenging phase of this incident," she said.

MULTI-STATE MANHUNT

More than 150 law enforcement officers on foot and on horseback had descended on the wilderness after a group of people returning from a horseback ride in the back country told police that they had spotted?DiMaggio?with the girl backpacking there on Wednesday.

One of the riders told police he exchanged casual pleasantries with the man and his young companion and saw no indication that she was in distress or being held against their will. He said that she andDiMaggio?had behaved oddly but gave no cause for alarm.

Police searched the trailhead for clues and found?DiMaggio's car, stripped of its license plates and covered with brush. Police feared the car could be rigged with explosives but a bomb squad found none on Friday.

The telecommunications technician had been the subject of a massive, multi-state manhunt since the killing of?Christina Anderson, 44, and 8-year-old?Ethan?and the abduction of Hannah, all of whom were last seen last Saturday.

The following day?DiMaggio?is suspected of having set his home on fire in the?San Diego?area community of Boulevard, triggering a multi-state search and child abduction?Amber Alerts.

The?San Diego County Sheriff's office?confirmed on Friday that the remains of a second body found at the house were?Ethan's. Police declined to say how?Christina Anderson?or her son were killed.

Authorities issued child-abduction alerts across the U.S. West and notified authorities in?Canada?andMexico?to watch for the wanted man and either of the Anderson children.

Police say?DiMaggio?bought camping equipment and other gear in the weeks leading up to his flight, suggesting that he had planned to hide out in the 2.3 million-acre (930,780-hectare), largely roadlessFrank Church?long before he fled with the 16-year-old.

He has been described as a longtime friend of the Anderson family who was like an uncle to the children.

Authorities have said they have no evidence of a precipitating incident or circumstances that might have led to the killings and abduction.?

Usher to keep custody of his 2 young sons

ATLANTA (AP) ? R&B singer Usher will hold on to primary custody of his two young sons.

A judge in Atlanta on Friday dismissed an emergency request by Usher's ex-wife seeking temporary custody of their two children.

Tameka Foster Raymond requested the hearing a day after the former couple's 5-year-old son got caught in a pool drain while in the care of the multi-Grammy winner's aunt at Usher's Atlanta home. Fulton County Superior Judge John Goger dismissed her request for decision-making authority after hearing from both sides in court.

After the judge issued his ruling, Usher approached his ex-wife, who broke down while testifying, and gave her a long hug.

Based on the evidence presented at the hearing, Goger said he wasn't certain anyone really could have done anything to prevent the accident. But he also advised the 34-year-old Usher to keep his ex-wife well advised of his whereabouts and who's taking care of the children.

Usher Raymond V fell to the bottom of the pool and became stuck in the drain on Monday, according to an Atlanta police report. A housekeeper tried unsuccessfully to free him. A contractor doing work at the home pulled the boy from the pool and performed CPR.

The boy was "conscious, alert and breathing" when emergency medical workers arrived, police said. The boy was still in the hospital Friday.

"They're just assessing him," Raymond told reporters outside the courthouse after the hearing. "There is a lot we don't know. I mean you can't ? it's only been a few days so we're very thankful that he's obviously alive but we still have to observe him and make sure that everything is OK."

Usher, who has recorded multi-platinum R&B albums "My Way" and "8701," left the courthouse in downtown Atlanta without speaking to reporters. He also has several chart-toppers including "Nice & Slow," ''U Remind Me" and "Love in This Club."

The filing had said the boy "suffered a near-death accident" while left unsupervised at Usher's home when the singer was out of town.

Contrary to what Raymond claimed, Usher's aunt, Rena Oden, was poolside watching the children when the older child became stuck in the drain, and Usher was at a music studio one highway exit away, said the singer's lawyer John Mayoue.

Rather than being grateful that her child had survived, Raymond used the episode to revisit the custody battle and gain publicity, Mayoue said.

The pool accident comes nearly a year after Raymond's 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, Usher's stepson, died from injuries he suffered when he was run over by a personal watercraft on Lake Lanier northeast of Atlanta.

Raymond, who is a hair and wardrobe stylist, was emotional during her testimony, at one point sobbing so hard that she had to step down from the witness stand to regain her composure.

"He doesn't confer with me regarding anything," Raymond said, explaining that she never knows where Usher is, where the children are and who's taking care of them. Usher travels frequently and uses caregivers, including his aunt, who aren't trained and qualified to care for young children, Raymond said.

Coger said he thought Raymond's standards for a caregiver were unusually high and pointed out that many people leave their children with family members.

Usher and Raymond married in 2007 and divorced two years later. They went through a lengthy child custody battle, and Usher was given primary custody of the boys, who are about a year apart in age.

Do shifts in the words we use define our culture's personality?

A UCLA analysis of words used over the past 200 years in American and British books concludes that our culture has shifted in parallel to the words we use and no longer use in literature. But is that conclusion believable??

A word-frequency analysis of more than 1.5 million books published in America and Britain during the last two centuries claims to show how our cultural values have changed.

The analysis, done by UCLA psychology professor Patricia Greenfield, found a significant increase in the use of what she considers materialistic and individualistic words like ?choose? and ?get? and a decrease in community-orientated words like ?give? and ?oblige,? among others, according to a release from UCLA.

But does this type of analysis prove we are less giving or obliging now than before? Are our families full of me-centric children or parents?

Maybe not. Perhaps the increases and decreases in word usage can be attributed to our own habit of changing a word?s meaning over time.

For example, take the word ?friend? ? once a noun, ?friend? has been famously turned into a verb by Facebook users.

Take it from child psychologist Randy Kulman: ?In the case of this study, I really think it?s more a case of words being used indiscriminately and incorrectly, like calling someone a friend on Facebook when you may not know them at all, than reflecting how people actually feel.?

If the use of the word ?friend? picks up around Facebook?s founding, then that implies two things: One, that culture affects the words used in literature; and two, that we may be using words in more than one way ? that ?get? doesn?t have to mean ?come to have or hold.?

Using Ngram, the Google tool Professor Greenfield used to conduct her study, I charted the frequency of ?friend? in American books published over the past two centuries.

The chart shows ?friend? peaked in 1836 and then began a decline that would last until 1980. It made a slow resurgence over the next two decades until, after Facebook?s founding in 2004, the frequency of ?friend? spiked.

Between 2004 and 2008, the use of ?friend? increased by 14 percent ? easily more than half the increase seen since the word started its ascent.

But, to me, ?friend? ? as used in that tender moment when one child faces another and says, ?You wanna be friends?? ? isn?t the ?friend? that?s increasing.?

Unfortunately, I have noticed it becoming more common among kids and adults to say, ?Friend me.? It?s become more a social networking command than a heartfelt request. It?s as if they?re becoming desensitized from overuse of the word.

In some cases I think this UCLA study needs a companion study of general word usage and decline to help us out in drawing conclusions.

For example, I think of the word ?obliged? and ?folks? in the same way ? colloquialisms, verbal and written antiques.

I don?t know many people who use the word ?obliged,? outside of Southern characters on TV like Vampire Bill in True Blood (?I?d be much obliged if you?d help me out by letting me devour all the faeries in town?).

Most people I know say, ?I?d appreciate it.?

The word obliged means to be morally bound vs. the freer version which is to see the value of the assist. If we do know the difference and still choose appreciation over obligation maybe it is technology and education, as Greenfield says, forcing us to be more precise and parse the words.

As parents we need to keep current with the words social media platforms are using and how those news uses may subtly alter our kids? perceptions and values over time.

Marilyn King, last of King Sisters group, dies

The King Sisters in 1966: Alyce King, Yvonne King, Marilyn King, Luise King.

The King Sisters in 1966: Alyce King, Yvonne King, Marilyn King, Luise King.

Marilyn King, the youngest and last surviving member of the swing-era vocal group The King Sisters, died Wednesday of cancer in Laguna Niguel, Calif. She was 82.

King?s great-nephews are brothers Win and Will Butler of The Arcade Fire.

The King Sisters, originally from Utah and founded in 1931, appeared in several films and released more than 150 records for labels including Blue Bird, RCA Victor, Capitol and Warner Bros. throughout the 1940s, ?50s and ?60s.

Marilyn began subbing for her sisters in their popular singing quartet (the original girls were Luise, Alyce, Donna and Yvonne) by age 13 at the height of the Big Band Era, and she officially joined the group in 1951.?

The family was the centerpiece of the popular 1960s ABC variety series "The King Family Show" as well as 17 King Family syndicated holiday specials throughout the years. The sisters toured for decades and made one of their final performances at the second inauguration of President Ronald Reagan in 1985.

Marilyn was instrumental in developing the group?s innovative four-part jazz vocal style. Their Capitol Records album "Imagination" was recorded with Alvino Rey and his orchestra and nominated for a Grammy in 1959. (Rey was married to Luise King.)

The tallest of the sisters, she was noted for the comedic repartee she shared with the much shorter Yvonne.?

King also was a composer, lyricist and arranger, and her songs included ?The Thrill Was New? and ?Hawaii Is Calling Me,? both featured on the sisters? albums for Capitol.

King was born in Glendale in 1931. While her elder sisters took to the road, dad William King Driggs trained Marilyn in concert piano and opera and groomed her to be a classical performer.?

She would appear with the Alvino Rey Orchestra and as a soloist with influential bandleaders including Les Brown, Harry James and Ray Anthony.

As an actress, King appeared in stage productions of "Guys and Dolls" and "Hello, Dolly!" and worked as a voice-over artist, lending her singing to "The Sound of Music" (1965), which won an Oscar for best music.?

King also was a regular on Rey?s 1951 Emmy-winning TV series "Ford Time" and had stints on such shows as "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet," "Laugh-In," "M*A*S*H," "The Hollywood Palace" and "The Ed Sullivan Show."

She made her final television appearance in the 2009 PBS musical retrospective "Christmas With the King Family."

Survivors also include her children Susannah and Adam, daughter and son of television syndication pioneer Howard Lloyd; Jennifer, a daughter of legendary Stan Kenton trombonist Kent Larsen; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral activities will take place at Forrest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that donations be sent to The Society of Singers charity in Sherman Oaks.

Padres put OF Quentin on DL with sprained knee

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The Padres put outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list with a strained knee before the second game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night.

It's the second significant setback to San Diego's lineup this week. All-Star shortstop Everth Cabrera was suspended for 50 games for taking a banned substance. The switch-hitting leadoff hitter leads the NL with 37 steals.

Quentin missed the last seven games with the injured right knee, which wasn't improving. He was batting .275 with a team-leading 45 RBIs and 13 homers, second to Will Venable for the team lead.

Outfielder Jaff Decker was called up from Triple-A Tucson. The left-handed hitter batted .293 with nine homers and 38 RBIs for Tucson. It's his third stint with San Diego this season.

UK retail major Tesco in talks for joint supermarket venture in China

Zimbabwe News.Net Friday 9th August, 2013

The move is aimed at reshaping its international business structure and form a "leading multi-format retailer in China".

The venture would combine Tesco's 131 stores in China with CRE's almost 3,000 stores, called Vanguard, to create what they say would be the leading multi-format retailer in China.

The combined business will have some 10 billion pounds in sales, dwarfing the 1.43 billion pounds Tesco generated on its own in China last year.

Retail analysts said the decision was effectively a surrender by Tesco, showing the difficulty foreign companies have in negotiating with suppliers and regulators in a fast-growing but tricky market.

State-run CRE would control 80% of the new chain while Tesco would have 20% stake..

Tesco and CRE both confirmed the talks in stock market statements.

"The intended partnership would bring together the company's deep understanding of local customers, established nationwide infrastructure and proven track record as a partner with Tesco's global retail expertise, international sourcing scale and supply chain capabilities," CRE said in a statement.

However, neither party has made any guarantee of the merger.

Britain's biggest retailer was trading 0.64% higher at 1.44 pm BST in London.

In a stock market statement, Tesco said the partnership is "consistent with Tesco's stated strategy of focusing on profitable routes to growth in fast-growing but less mature markets, with a disciplined approach to the allocation of capital".

Tesco opened its first store in China in 2004. In 2011, Tesco, the second largest retailer, announced plans to expand business presence in the world's second largest economy.

The Chinese market has been a particular target for retailers in recent times, with the world's biggest retailer, Wal-Mart, reportedly planning a bid for Hong Kong supermarket unit ParknShop. Wal-Mart said they were planning to expand business interests in Asian emerging markets.

In April this year, Tesco posted a bigger-than-expected fall in full year profits - a first in 20 years.

Earlier this month, it was reported Tesco axed 50 senior executives from head offices. The move came as chief executive Philip Clarke begins plans to revive business for UK's largest retailer.

Tesco has also announced plans to exit loss-making business in the US, where it operates under the Fresh and Easy brand.

At home, where Tesco makes about two thirds of its revenues, it is pumping 1 billion pounds into store revamps and new food ranges to revitalise a business that lost ground to rivals and suffered from weak demand for general merchandise, as cash-strapped Britons cut back on discretionary spend.

In China, where Tesco makes around 2 percent of sales, the hypermarket industry is likely to grow to 863.8 billion yuan by 2015, from an estimated 659.6 billion yuan in 2013, according to Euromonitor.

"Its partner brings formidable scale and local access, so it is hard to fault the logic of the move, even if it reads badly for the initial gung-ho expansion into China under previous management," independent retail analyst Nick Bubb said, reports Reuters.

Nuclear reactor on INS Arihant goes critical; huge step forward for India's N-triad

Nuclear reactor on INS Arihant goes critical; huge step forward for India's N-triad

(File picture of INS Arihant)

Moving towards completing its nuclear triad, India on Friday night activated the atomic reactor on-board the indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant paving way for its operational deployment by the Navy soon.

Top government sources told NDTV that all systems of the indigenously made nuclear reactor are "go" and the submarine will soon be launched to sea on the Eastern coast.

"We are gearing up for the sea trials of Arihant," the then Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chief V K Saraswat had told reporters in May.

Nuclear triad is the ability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from land, air and sea. After the nuclear reactor is activated, the agencies concerned can work towards readying the warship for operational deployments soon.

According to earlier reports, the DRDO has also readied a medium-range nuclear missile BO-5 for deployment on the Arihant and its last developmental trial was held on January 27 off the coast of Vishakhapatnam.

So far, the US, Russia, France, China, and the UK have the capability to launch a submarine-based ballistic missile.

Though this comes as good news for India's defence capabilities, there is some concern over the overall strength of India's submarine fleet. India has 14 conventional submarines that run on either battery or diesel and are aging and outdated. Each of them will have completed the standard life-span of 25 years by 2017.

The nuclear submarine will help India achieve the capability of going into high seas without the need to surface the vessel for long durations.

Conventional diesel-electric submarines have to come up on surface at regular intervals for charging the cells of the vessel.

New Delhi, Aug 9, 2013 (PTI)

Indian and Chinese troops had a face-off in Sikkim earlier this week which, however, ended in a friendly exchange of beer and rasgullas.

The face-off happened near the Tangkar La pass at the height of over 16,000 feet in eastern Sikkim after a Chinese patrol entered into territory claimed by India, sources told PTI here.

The Chinese patrol, which was travelling in two light vehicles, was monitored by the Indian team comprising a young Lieutenant and nine jawans there, they said.

The Indian patrol intercepted the Chinese patrol at the Tangkar La pass and after that, they showed banners to each other asking to leave the area and go back into their respective territories.

At the time of parting, the Chinese troops presented cans of Budweiser beer to the Indian patrol while our troops gifted them a pack of rasgullas, they said.

In the recent past, there have been a spate of incursions from the Chinese side into the Indian territory all along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the two sides stretching from Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir in north to Arunachal Pradesh in the northeast.

On the transgressions by Chinese troops, Defence Minister A K Antony had recently said that "there is no commonly delineated Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. There are areas along the border where India and China have different perceptions of the LAC and both sides undertake patrols up to their respective positions there."

"On account of differences in perception of LAC, certain transgression incidents do take place on ground. Government regularly takes up any transgression with the Chinese side through established mechanisms," he had said.?

Peyton Manning rap and Wes Welker admission dominate sports talk

Peyton Manning, right, and Eli Manning in a DirecTV commercial. (Getty Images)

Like the 49ers? cornerbacks, I woke up with Peyton Manning on my mind.

Blaring from the other room, as my girlfriend prepared for work, were the exceedingly glee anchors on NBC?s ?Today? show, gushing about Peyton?s rap video. And all I could think was ? at least this is a nice escape from Wes Welker.

Thursday night, mercifully, there is an actual game (though it?s not an actual actual game), with the Broncos playing at the 49ers. But for now, everyone is talking about Welker being mocked by Bill Belichick and Manning mocking Color Me Badd.

The new Broncos wide receiver told Sports Illustrated that last season, the Patriots coach would admonish him in front of the team.

?It was just kind of hard,? Welker told SI, ?one of those deals where you have to endure him, put up with him. I felt like there came a point where he was (voice tails off) ? But he does it to everybody, it?s the way he is.?

Naturally, some New England fans now believe Welker wimped out and went running from a possibility at another Pats AFC title because the coach was a meanie. Look. First of all, we don?t know the severity of what Belichick was doing, so who are we to judge how harsh it was or wasn?t? But even if we all found out exactly what he did to Welker, and the judging fans conclude that it was, certifiably, bearable ? who cares, because obviously it wasn?t bearable to Welker, and he has the reputation of being a dedicated teammate and a voracious worker. (We?re talking about a guy with a perpetual chip on his disproportionately sized shoulders, after first not receiving college offers from D-I schools, then going undrafted.)

Here?s what?s going through Welker?s head during the offseason: ?So I can stay in New England for two years and $10 million, play for a team with some holes on it and get embarrassed a bunch by the coach. Or I can go play with Peyton Manning and the team with one of the best defenses ? and make $2 million more.?

So, welcome, Welker.

As for the Peyton and Eli Manning rap video, ?Football On Your Phone,? at first I was all fired up because 1) Peyton is super funny in commercials, and 2) DID YOU SEE ELI?S HAIR?

But right away, I was thinking ? who exactly are they supposed to be? Of course, the video was in the same style of the ?Saturday Night Live? videos with Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake. (Though the funniest thing J.T. ever did on ?SNL? was being a contestant on the game show ?What?s That Name,? and he couldn?t remember the name of people in his life, such as NSYNC?s Chris Kirkpatrick ? or a woman he just slept with.) In those videos, the ?SNL? guys are mocking the soulful raps of the early 1990s. Eli fit the part, but Peyton? He looked like a backup dancer in the Michael Jackson ?Beat It? video.

And I wanted to laugh at the lyrics, but they weren?t, like, funny. (Though I did release a minor guffaw when they said, ?Look at this guy using his phone as a phone. Your phone ain?t for callin?, your phone?s for footballin?!?)

Photos Of The Real Detroit, Through The Eyes Of The People Who Live There

There's a lot more to Detroit than meets the eye. Good or bad, there are perspectives of the city you might not see unless you live here.

That's what we wanted to show in a story that shined a light on the complex city and its thousands of residents who can sometimes get overlooked in the national news stories about Detroit.

We asked that readers send their photos of the "real Detroit" -- a phrase that likely means something different to each person, but is defined by the people who live here and experience it. The responses we received were overwhelming; both from Detroiters sharing images of their favorite places, and ndividuals from far-off places giving their best wishes for the city. One reader even made a video.

Below, see images of HuffPost readers' Detroit, and submit your own.

  • In July 2013, we <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/27/detroit-is-not-dead-photos_n_3652645.html"" target="_blank">shared our view of the complex and beloved city of Detroit</a>, and then we asked readers to share theirs. Here are some of the great responses we received. Photo <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/tinawebanalyst/7498626952/sizes/l/in/set-72157630413595060/" target="_blank">by Tina Logan</a>.

Most of the girls never had left their neighborhoods but now they can say they have been on a train to Ann Arbor, a boat ride on the Detroit River, a party bus to see Mama Mia at the Fisher Theatre, attended summer camp and many other trips. These girls now are asking to go on college campus tours. (Goosebumps!) We have taught these eight girls that they have to have a respectful voice about and for their community. My wish is they will bring back their experiences and share them with others and try to find ways to change their neighborhood. One of the girls loved that Ann Arbor had recycling bins and asked me how she might bring recycling to her school. The trips are funded by a small company my friend and I started a few years back when the auto bailout was going on. We created a product line called Don't Mess with the Mitten. Our items are sold on line and at dozens of retail stores in Michigan. There are a ton of amazing and talented people in Detroit! We just all need to extend a 'mitten' to help our family in the D!"

Obama Says He&#39;d Save Money by Refinancing Mortgage - Memphis ...

    Skip Navigation LinksHome >

    VOL. 128 | NO. 154 | Thursday, August 08, 2013

JULIE PACE | AP White House Correspondent

    Updated 3:30PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Wednesday he'd save money if he refinanced the mortgage on his Chicago home, but he hasn't jumped on current low interest rates because "when you're president you have to be a little careful about these transactions."

Obama didn't say how much money he thought he and first lady Michelle Obama could save on their South Side Chicago home. In speeches about the housing market, he has said federal programs have helped millions of homeowners save an average of $3,000 by refinancing at lower rates.

Financial disclosure forms Obama released this year show an interest rate of 5.625 percent on the 30-year mortgage on his South Side Chicago home, which was valued at between $500,000 and $1 million. Bankrate.com says the current rate on a 30-year mortgage is 4.5 percent.

"I would probably benefit from refinancing now. I would save some money," Obama said while answering questions submitted by users of Zillow, an online real estate database. "When you're president you have to be a little careful about these transactions so we haven't refinanced."

The half-hour session conducted during the president's visit to California focused exclusively on housing and, at times, had the feel of an advice show as Obama sympathized with questioners concerned about maintaining their home values or being stuck living in their parents' homes because they can't afford to rent an apartment.

The Zillow appearance followed Obama's speech Tuesday in Phoenix, in which he proposed a broad overhaul of the nation's mortgage finance system, including phasing out government-backed mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The president's focus on housing is part of his summertime tour aimed at building public support for his economic proposals before fiscal fights with congressional Republicans in the fall.

Obama pledged in the Zillow interview to push Congress to pass his plan before the end of the year.

Before returning to Washington after two days on the West Coast to promote his housing proposals, Obama planned to meet with troops and their families at Camp Pendleton. Obama wanted to visit the sprawling Marine Corps base to thank them for serving the country, the White House said.

Separately Wednesday, White House press secretary Jay Carney disclosed that Obama dined Tuesday night at his Los Angeles hotel with Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks.

The iPad Is Not The Biggest-Selling Tablet Platform

We think of Apple?s iPad as the dominant tablet, but that isn?t necessarily the case anymore. Statistics from Business Insider Intelligence suggest that Android now accounts for 64 per cent of the global tablet market.

BI?s analysis of shipments for the Q2 2013 suggests that bargain-priced Android tablets are growing market share, especially in countries where Apple?s premium prices are less affordable. (Australia is not one of those countries.)

For developers, that doesn?t mean the iPad is a poor choice; bargain tablet buyers may not want to pay for apps, Apple?s device still enjoys a huge chunk of the market, and new iPad models this year or next are likely to drive a sales boost. Nonetheless, the notion that iOS-only is enough doesn?t seem valid for tablets any more.
