Clippers beat Rockets 106-96 for 3rd straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Caron Butler scored 17 of his 19 points in the opening quarter when the Clippers shot 77 percent and Los Angeles led all the way in beating the Houston Rockets 106-96 on Wednesday night for their third win in a row.

Blake Griffin had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Chauncey Billups had 19 points, Jamal Crawford scored 13 points and Chris Paul had 10 points and 11 assists as the Clippers started all their regulars after the lineup had been hit by injuries during their recent Grammy road trip.

Chandler Parsons scored 17 points, Jeremy Lin added 14 points and James Anderson had a season-high 14 for the Rockets, who have lost five straight to the Clippers and three of five overall.

James Harden missed the game with a sprained right ankle and sore left knee after stepping on David Lee's left shoe in the fourth quarter against Golden State. Harden is the Rockets' lone All-Star selection.

With the Clippers' powerful starters reunited and shooting their highest percentage in a quarter this season, it wasn't enough that the Rockets shot 50 percent in the first. They still trailed 46-28 as the Clippers scored their most points in a period since 1986.

Los Angeles cooled off in the second but still led 69-49 at the break.

Crawford's 3-pointer pushed the Clippers' lead to 23 points early in the second before the Rockets cut it to 11 points on a basket by Lin. Then Los Angeles closed on a 10-2 run to end the half, punctuated by DeAndre Jordan's one-handed dunk off Paul's alley-oop pass.

Griffin's hook put the Clippers ahead by 22 points early in the third and the Rockets trailed 88-72 heading into the fourth.

The Rockets got within 11 points on two free throws by Anderson early in the fourth before the Clippers' starters returned and stretched their lead.

Butler and Billups were game-time decisions after both had sore lower backs. Paul recently returned after missing 12 games with a bruised right knee cap, while Griffin came back after missing a couple games with a strained left hamstring.

NOTES: The Clippers went 4-4 on their recent Grammy road trip, third-best in 13 seasons of making the annual February trek. Their best record of 4-2 came last year and in 2006. ... Love on Facebook: Women More Prone to Jealousy

Women are more prone to romantic jealousy spurred by Facebook posts than men, particularly if they think other people can see that their relationship may be in trouble, a new study suggests.

During the study, 226 heterosexual college-age men and women were asked to imagine that they had discovered a photo of their significant other with a person of the opposite sex on Facebook. In the hypothetical scenario, the study participants could view the privacy settings of their boyfriend's or girlfriend's Facebook account (which was still logged in) ? and thus could see whether the photo was visible to others on Facebook.

Women reported greater feelings of jealousy when they imagined the scenario than did men. Women rated their level of jealousy as a six out of a possible nine, compared to a four out of nine for men.

Both women and men reported the greatest level of jealousy if the photo's privacy settings meant that ?the photo could not be viewed by other people on Facebook ? an indication that their romantic interest was trying to hide something. If the photo could be seen by other people on Facebook, men's level of jealousy dropped, while women's remained high.

Women were also more hurt by the scenario than men if there were relatively few photos of them with their partner on Facebook.

Together "these findings suggest that the public nature of potential infidelity may influence emotions differently for men and women," the researchers wrote in the Feb. 1 issue of the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. "Women may experience more negative [emotions] when they believe that others are able to view lack of evidence of being in a committed relationship," they said.

However, because the scenario was imagined, it's impossible to know whether the findings would translate into the real world, or actually cause a couple to break up. Future research should examine whether a situation on Facebook, similar to the one used in this study, would hurt a real relationship, the researchers, from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, said.

Previous studies have found that people who spend more time on Facebook report greater levels of romantic jealously, and more frequent viewing of their partner's Facebook profile, than people who spend less time on the social networking site.

Facebook also presents people with opportunities to misinterpret information, the researchers said. For instance, the scenario described in the current study did not necessarily provide evidence of infidelity, but it was interpreted that way. "Facebook can be a place where individuals interpret ambiguous information in a non-ambiguous way, producing negative emotions," the researchers said.

Fearful of accidentally chomping down on cardboard-stuffed dumplings or toxic chicken, Chinese consumers may soon be able to run safety tests on their food before putting it in their mouths.

According to a report from the official Xinhua news agency, scientists at the Tianjin University of Science and Technology in northern China have developed an at-home testing kit to help consumers detect more than 60 varieties of chemicals in their food.

The tests, conducted with indicator paper, let consumers know within minutes if a food sample contains harmful substances, Xinhua said, predicting the product will likely be in high demand.

Urgent PC update: Microsoft issues 57 security fixes

As it does on the second Tuesday of every month, Microsoft celebrated "Patch Tuesday" this week. Perhaps in an attempt to keep us all extra safe on Valentine's Day, the software giant went all out, issuing fixes for 57 flaws, making this one of its biggest security updates in recent memory.

Jonathan Ness, who leads the Microsoft Security Response Center engineering team, notes that this update includes twelve "security bulletins" which address 52 common vulnerabilities and exposures. Five of the bulletins have a severity rating of "critical" and seven are deemed "important." This means that they address exploitable issues, ones that could cause quite a headache if left unpatched. You better get your mouse pointer to that good ol' "Update" button, stat! Affected Microsoft products run the gamut: Windows, Internet Explorer, Office and more.

The Verge's Adrianne Jeffries notes that while this month's security update is particulary huge, it's not breaking any records for Microsoft. The company's all-time biggest update fixed 64 bugs.

So, who is busy helping Microsoft close up its security holes? None other than its arch nemesis, Google. In fact, Microsoft acknowledges that 32 of the 57 items addressed in Tuesday's update were reported by Google engineers Gynvael Coldwind and Mateusz "j00ru" Jurczyk.

Simulation helps scientists better understand the origin of our solar system

Feb. 13, 2013 ? Simulations boost the significance of image and measurement data from space missions: based on the example of an asteroid, Bernese astrophysicist Martin Jutzi shows how collisions with other celestial bodies can be reconstructed and that even the internal structure of so-called protoplanets can be described. These models help to understand the development of our solar system.

Four and a half billion years ago, dust particles in a giant, dusty gas cloud combined to form increasingly large clumps. These collided, aggregated and thus grew into planets. Between the planetary orbits of Mars and Jupiter, however, hundreds of thousands of smaller fragments remained. They formed the so-called asteroid belt and hardly changed their composition since then. Asteroids thus contain an inestimable amount of information on the origin of our solar system. In research, particular attention is paid to an asteroid called Vesta: with a diameter of around 500 kilometres, it is one of the three largest asteroids and considered to be a protoplanet. Moreover, it is the only known asteroid to have an earth-like structure -- with a core, mantle and crust.

Computer simulation reconstructs collisions between asteroids

Using a three-dimensional computer simulation, Martin Jutzi from the Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern has now accurately reconstructed how Vesta collided with other asteroids twice over a billion years ago. The models show that the protoplanet owes its elliptical shape to these collisions and that they also scarred its surface structure. The simulations also enable detailed conclusions on the composition and properties of Vesta's interior to be drawn for the first time, which helps us to better understand the evolution of the solar system.

After all, the formation of planets largely depends upon collisions between celestial bodies. "Our method facilitates especially informative analyses of image and measurement data from space missions," says Martin Jutzi. The study, which was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the EPFL, France and the USA, features as the cover story in the February 14 issue of Nature.

Models uncover hidden secrets

Previously, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope provided initial evidence of a giant crater at Vesta's south pole. Then, in 2007, NASA's "Dawn" probe began its space voyage into the solar system's past. Starting in the summer of 2011, it closely orbited Vesta for one year. Images from within the visible range as well as other measurement data provided information on the asteroid's topography and the composition of the minerals that are visible on its surface. It became apparent that the crater observed by Hubble at Vesta's south pole is actually composed of two partially overlapping basins.

Based on this information, the computer simulations by Jutzi's team now demonstrate exactly how two consecutive impacts of celestial bodies led to the formation of the observed overlapping basins, which almost span the entire southern hemisphere of Vesta. The models show the size (66 and 64 kilometres in diameter), velocity (5.4 kilometres per second) and the impact angle of the bodies that collided with Vesta. This reveals a lot about the properties of the objects that were near the protoplanet a billion years ago.

The final images of the simulations closely resemble the shape and topography of Vesta's southern hemisphere as observed by the Dawn mission. The models even accurately reproduce the spiral-shaped structures inside the youngest crater which are visible on images from the Dawn mission. "This shows how reliable our method is," rejoices Jutzi. The researchers assume that the models also provide information about previously hidden features of Vesta. For instance, the simulations reveal that the material exposed by the impacts comes from depths of up to 100 kilometres. "Based on the sort and distribution of this material we are able to precisely reconstruct the various inner layers of Vesta," explains Philippe Gillet, Direktor des Earth and Planetary Science Laboratory der EPFL.

"The fact that we can now look inside such protoplanets makes entirely new perspectives in the research on the history of our solar system possible," says Jutzi.

Historically, Japan has been a tough place for phone manufacturers to gain any traction. It was always seen as being an isolated island where technology was so far ahead of what the West was using, to attempt to break that market was seen as foolish. That said, Apple partnered with Softbank, and launched. The following for Apple?s iPhone in the country is so large now, that it?s generally always among the first group of countries to get a new iDevice on launch day. 2012?s results are evidence of that success.

Counterpoint Research as done some analysis of the market, and discovered that Apple was the most popular phone manufacturer in Japan over 2012. Not just smartphones, mobile phones in general. Thanks to a great end of year launch for the iPhone 5, Apple finished with 15% of the entire mobile market. The usual suspects, Sharp and Fujitsu, were just behind, each with around 14% of the market. Before Apple?s success, Sharp had been Japan?s top manufacturer for the past 6 years on the trot.

It appears the Japanese market is shifting in favor of the iPhone. It?ll be interesting to see how other manufacturers respond.

Guinea honors 11 officers who died in plane crash

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) ? The 11 Guinean officers who died in a plane crash in Liberia are being honored at a state funeral presided over by the West African country's president.

Gen. Souleymane Kelefa Diallo, chief of staff of the Guinean army, and 10 other senior military officers were flying to Liberia to attend Armed Forces Day celebrations when their plane crashed early Monday about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Monrovia, the Liberian capital.

Guinea is observing three days of mourning for the officers who were honored at the ceremony Wednesday.

Guinean President Alpha Conde posthumously promoted Diallo to the rank of Dignity of Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit of the Republic of Guinea. The ten other officers were named as Commanders of the National Order of Merit.
