8 bodies found in Mexico where band went missing

(AP) ? At least eight bodies were pulled from a well in northern Mexico on Sunday near the site where 20 people went missing late last week, including members of a Colombian-style band, according to a state forensic official.

The Nuevo Leon State Investigative Agency was still working late into the night at the well in a vacant lot in the town of Mina near the northern city of Monterrey, and the body count could rise, said the official.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because he w+as not authorized to discuss the case.

The official could not confirm whether the bodies belonged to 16 members of Kombo Kolombia and their crew, who were reported missing early Friday after playing a private show in a bar late Thursday in the next town, Hidalgo.

Authorities had been searching for two days when they came upon the well Sunday afternoon.

People living near the bar in Hidalgo municipality north of Monterrey reported hearing gunshots about 4 a.m. Friday, following by the sound of vehicles speeding away, said a source with the state agency. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by the news media.

The officials added that gunfire is common in the area, and said investigators found spent bullets nearby.

Relatives filed an official report about their missing loved ones on Friday, after they lost cellular telephone contact with them following the Thursday night performance. When family members went to the bar to investigate, they found the band members' vehicles still parked outside.

For three years, Kombo Kolombia has played a Colombian style of music known as vallenato, which is popular in Nuevo Leon state. Most of the group's musicians were from the area, and have held large concerts in addition to bar performances.

Nuevo Leon state officials said one of those missing is a Colombian citizen with Mexican residency.

Members of other musical bands, usually groups that performed "narcocorridos" celebrating the exploits of drug traffickers, have been killed in Mexico in recent years. But Kombo Kolombia did not play that type of music and its lyrics did not deal with violence or drug trafficking.

QUOTES:????

Attributed to Dave Filoni:

?To have the opportunity to entertain the families stationed at Miramar for a short while, and take them to our galaxy far, far away, was a real privilege. They do so much for us every day, it was an honor to be asked to do something for them.?

Attributed to Dee Bradley Baker:

"The stories we tell in "The Clone Wars" resonate in a special way with military fans. It's incredible to see! I've had officers serving in the Middle East tell me they love our show and how they've turned their platoon on to our show and the clones in particular. They are as into our show as anyone I've ever met! I've met with dads and their kids who show me the incredibly accurate clone armor they've made. It's such an honor to meet these folks and thank them for their service. The characters we portray in our show are heroic, but these service men and women are real heroes in my eyes and it's truly exciting to meet them and share their enthusiasm for Star Wars: The Clone Wars!"

Attributed to Catherine Taber:

?The USO event was amazing! From seeing the jets fly over, to sitting in the pilot seat of the Osprey, it was a fantastic time. But the best part of day and the heart of it all really, was meeting the servicemen and women, their families and the children and spouses of deployed soldiers. I hope they enjoyed the event as much as we did and know how truly grateful we are for their sacrifices. Thank you USO for making it happen!?

Attributed to James Arnold Taylor:

"As someone who has worked with the USO in the past, I was thrilled to combine forces with our Clone Wars cast and bring an event to our troops that was family-friendly and just plain fun! It's an honor to be a part of anything that supports our men and women of the U.S. Military."

Attributed to Matt Lanter:

I have such a fondness and supreme respect for our troops who protect our freedom and their families who endure. To be able to give back in a small way was such a privilege for me and I would love to continue supporting the USO however I can in the future.

Attributed to Ashley Eckstein:

It was truly an honor to have the opportunity to share Star Wars The Clone Wars with the troops and their families at MCAS Miramar. This was a very small way that we could say Thank You for the service that these amazing men and women provide for us everyday. The Force is Strong with MCAS Miramar!

Jindal: 'Stop Being The Stupid Party'

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

NOTABLES:

BREAKING - OBAMA TO ANNOUNCE CHIEF OF STAFF: From the White House: "This afternoon, the President will introduce Denis McDonough as the new White House Chief of Staff. The President will make this personnel announcement at the White House at 12:10 PM in the East Room. Denis has been one of the President's closest and most trusted advisors for nearly a decade, dating back to when he helped set up then Senator's Barack Obama's Senate office. He has relied on his intellect and good judgment ever since- most recently as a member of the President's national security team. In that capacity, Denis has played a key role in all of the major national security decisions - from ending the war in Iraq to winding down the war in Afghanistan; from our response to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan; to the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"

FORMER DEFENSE SECRETARY, NATIONAL SECURITY OFFICIALS ENDORSE HAGEL. Chuck Hagel, President Obama's controversial secretary of Defense nominee, received a boost on Thursday, ABC's Jonathan Karl reports: Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates - who served under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama - has signed on to a letter with a bi-partisan group of 12 other former top national security officials expressing his "strong endorsement" of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense. The list also includes several top national security officials for Republican presidents: Brent Scrowcroft (Bush 41), Mel Laird (Nixon), George Schultz (Reagan), Colin Powell (Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43), Robert McFarlane (Reagan). It's a pretty formidable list. http://abcn.ws/WS4iWP

HAPPENING TODAY: Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Jim Cole, and other Obama administration officials will hold a roundtable discussion on reducing gun violence at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., will also attend. According to the White House, the session will include experts who have worked on gun safety issues in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting.

THIS WEEK ON 'THIS WEEK': After Hillary Clinton faced off with Congress on Benghazi, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., of the Foreign Relations Committee speak to ABC News Chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz, Sunday on "This Week." And the powerhouse roundtable debates all the week's politics, with ABC News' George Will; Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz.; Democratic strategist and ABC News contributor Donna Brazile; NPR "Morning Edition" host Steve Inskeep; and New Republic owner and publisher Chris Hughes, who interviewed President Obama for an Oval Office exclusive on newsstands next week. Plus, "Zero Dark Thirty" screenwriter Mark Boal and "Blackhawk Down" author Mark Bowden discuss the controversy over the Oscar-nominated film. Tune in Sunday: http://abcnews.go.com/thisweek

THE ROUNDTABLE:

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: Although Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is already the subject of speculation as a potential GOP presidential contender four years from now, if you ask him, it's way too soon for speculating. "Any Republican that's thinking about running for president in 2016 needs to get his head examined," Jindal told reporters after delivering a dinner speech at the Republican National Committee winter meeting last night. He added, "We've got a lot of work between now and the next midterm elections. ? We've got to get the Republican Party back on track." In his remarks to the gathering, he also offered some tough medicine for the GOP, including this piece of advice: "We must stop being the stupid party. It's time for a new Republican party that talks like adults. It's time for us to articulate our plans and visions for America in real terms. We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. We've had enough of that." Whether or not Jindal ultimately emerges as a top presidential contender, look for him to be a major presence, not just in Louisiana, but around the country as well as a key figure in helping the party chart its course forward.

ABC's Z. BYRON WOLF: There's a bit of irony - if that's the right word - in the fact that it took fewer than 12 hours for senators to hatch, agree, and vote on a deal to tweak filibuster rules. The filibuster technically allows the minority to engage in unlimited debate. But changing the filibuster got barely any debate at all. Then again, the filibuster didn't really change. The deal passed overwhelmingly last night creates new rules to grease the arcane and usually slow-moving cogs of the "World's Greatest Deliberative Body." But 40 votes can still block anything. Would-be reformers say these rule changes are weak sauce. But it may represent a recognition in the Senate that things aren't really working the way they're supposed to.

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Can we get a round of applause for being quiet? Mitt Romney is in Washington today, of course a few days later than he wanted to have been in town, and on a far more temporary basis. What's remarkable, though, is how silent he's been in the 10-plus weeks since he didn't win the presidency. Save for a phone call with supporters that he didn't expect to come out - the one about the "gifts" that supposedly helped President Obama win a second term - we haven't heard Romney's voice at all since the election. He was not invited to the inauguration, and without a federal office he's holding, there would have been no reason for him to attend. There will be a time when Romney has something meaningful to contribute to the public dialog on, or something to reflect on or unburden himself with. In the meantime, until he feels like he has something to add, silence is worth savoring.

JOE BIDEN'S 'FIRESIDE HANGOUT': GUNS, EARTHQUAKES. ABC's Arlette Saenz reports: Sitting in front of a fireplace, Vice President Joe Biden participated in his first ever Google+ "Fireside Hangout" Thursday in his most recent attempt to push the administration's gun policy agenda, one that he said is focused on "gun safety" not "gun control." "I don't view it as gun control. I view it as gun safety," Biden said in a Google+ "Fireside Hangout" on gun violence. ? "My view is that it is totally a guarantee, not negotiable, that I'm able to own a weapon for sporting purposes as well as for my own protection, but there should be rational limits on the type of weapon" needed for protection or sports, he said. ? the vice president doled out a bit of advice for how to protect oneself after a deadly earthquake, telling one questioner a shotgun is more effective than an assault weapon. "If you want to keep people away during an earthquake, buy some shotgun shells," Biden said. http://abcn.ws/WpFAfn

PANETTA MAKES IT OFFICIAL: WOMEN WILL BE ABLE TO SERVE IN COMBAT. From ABC's Chris Good, Luis Martinez, and Mary Bruce: Women will soon be able to serve in combat, as things officially changed with the stroke of a pen today at the Pentagon. At a joint news conference, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Charman Gen. Martin Dempsey signed a memorandum rolling back a 1994 directive prohibiting women from doing so. "They serve, they're wounded, and they die right next to each other," Panetta said of women and men in the military. "The time has come to recognize that reality. "If they're willing to put their lives on the line, then we need to recognize that they deserve a chance," Panetta said ? The change won't be immediate, however. While Panetta announced that thousands of new positions will now be open to women, he has asked the military branches to submit plans by May on how to integrate women into combat operations. He set a January 2016 deadline for branches to implement the changes, giving military services time to seek waivers for certain jobs. http://abcn.ws/WRuVuZ

OBAMA APPLAUDS THE MOVE. Obama hailed the move in a written statement. "Today, by moving to open more military positions - including ground combat units - to women, our armed forces have taken another historic step toward harnessing the talents and skills of all our citizens," he said. "This milestone reflects the courageous and patriotic service of women through more than two centuries of American history and the indispensable role of women in today's military," Obama said. "As commander in chief, I am absolutely confident that-as with the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'-the professionalism of our armed forces will ensure a smooth transition and keep our military the very best in the world," the president said. "Today, every American can be proud that our military will grow even stronger with our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters playing a greater role in protecting this country we love." http://abcn.ws/WRuVuZ (h/t ABC's Mary Bruce)

REPUBLICAN PARTY SET TO RE-ELECT CHAIR: Members of the Republican National Committee who have gathered for their winter meeting in Charlotte, N.C. today are poised to re-elect current Chairman Reince Priebus for another two-year term this afternoon. Priebus, the 40-year-old Wisconsin native who was elected to head the party in 2011, did not preside over a period that saw a winning Republican presidential candidate, but he did lead his party out of a deep hole of debt - more than $20 million left by former RNC Chairman Michael Steele. Chairman Priebus plans to deliver a speech to the meeting today and one of his big themes will be about how Republicans need to stay on a campaign footing at all times."Simple outreach' a few months before an election will not suffice," Priebus plans to tell the gathering, according to excerpts of his remarks. "In fact, let's stop talking about 'reaching out' - and start working on welcoming in. Political support is cultivated over time - not collected on Election Day." Chairman Priebus will also issue this call: "To those who have left the party, we want to earn your trust again. To those who have yet to join us, we welcome you-with open doors and open arms."

POST-ELECTION DATA WAR: TECHIES VS. POLS. The Verge's Ben Popper reported this week that Democratic operatives and Obama's tech team are fighting over what to do with the code that helped elect Obama: "[I]n the aftermath of the election, a stark divide has emerged between political operatives and the techies who worked side-by-side. At issue is the code created during the Obama for America (OFA) 2012 campaign: the digital architecture behind the campaign's website, its system for collecting donations, its email operation, and its mobile app. When the campaign ended, these programmers wanted to put their work back into the coding community for other developers to study and improve upon. Politicians in the Democratic party felt otherwise, arguing that sharing the tech would give away a key advantage to the Republicans. Three months after the election, the data and software is still tightly controlled by the president and his campaign staff, with the fate of the code still largely undecided. It's a choice the OFA developers warn could not only squander the digital advantage the Democrats now hold, but also severely impact their ability to recruit top tech talent in the future." http://bit.ly/UPNLDg

WHITE HOUSE, CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS TO MEET ON IMMIGRATION. The Huffington Post's Elise Foley reports: "The White House will meet on Friday with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to discuss immigration reform. The meeting, one of many between President Barack Obama's administration and Hispanic members of Congress, adds steam to Obama's inaugural pledge to push for immigration reform. Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have provided guidance for the president in the past. The president's schedule for Friday says he will be at the White House in meetings, but does not specify whether he will speak with Hispanic Caucus members. The meeting was confirmed to The Huffington Post by Democratic sources not authorized to speak on the record about the meeting." http://huff.to/10W3mHx

WHY IS HILLARY CLINTON WEARING GLASSES? If you noticed the glasses Hillary Clinton wore during her appearances on the Hill to talk about Benghazi, ABC's Dana Hughes reports: "She'll be wearing these glasses instead of her contacts for a period of time because of lingering issues stemming from her concussion. With them on she sees just fine. In fact, she got a kick out of the above when she saw them crystal clear," Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines has confirmed.

TOM TANCREDO SAYS HE'LL SMOKE POT. Former congressman Tom Tancredo says he'll honor a bet to smoke marijuana. In a video to promote Colorado's Amendment 64, which legalized the personal use of marijuana in the state, Tancredo reportedly pledged to smoke pot if the measure passed. Tancredo, a self-professed non-marijuana-smoker, supported the measure. "Look, I made a bet with the producer of the film that if Amendment 64 passed (I did not think it would) that I would smoke pot," Fox News quotes Tancredo as saying. "I will therefore smoke pot under circumstances we both agree are legal under Colorado law. Hey, it's better than having to do a stupid dance as [Denver] Mayor [Michael] Hancock must perform as a result of losing a bet on the Broncos beating the Ravens." http://abcn.ws/14aH2su

MEMO TO FLIES: DON'T BUG OBAMA! Something was bugging President Obama yesterday as he nominated Mary Jo White to head the Securities and Exchange Commission and re-nominated Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ABC's Mary Bruce notes. "This guy is bothering me here," the president said, as he repeatedly swatted at a large black fly buzzing near his face. Given Obama's reputation, it was a bold move for the insect to spar with the "swatter in chief."During a June 2009 CNBC interview, Obama famously killed a fly with a single smack. "Get out of here," the president ordered of the fly before the interview began. When the directive was ignored, Obama waited for the fly to land on his hand and then, "slap," swiftly ended its life with a single blow. "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it?" Obama proudly declared. "I got the sucker." (PETA later condemned the move). The fly in the State Dining Room today was lucky enough to avoid a similar fate. http://abcn.ws/11UGiYQ

Hackers take over sentencing commission website

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

Democrats, Don?t Freak Out!

150990856 RNC Chairman Reince Priebus

Sound the alarm! Democrats are on high alert! Josh Marshall calls it a big, big deal. Eric Kleefeld says if the blueprint were in place last November, the GOP would have ?stolen 2012 for Mitt Romney.? Steve Benen of the Maddow Blog calls it a ?democracy-crushing scheme? showing that ?the will of the voters and the consent of the governed are now antiquated concepts that Republicans no longer value.?

They?re all talking about potential plans to change the method for electing the president in states like Virginia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania?states that have Republican legislatures and governors but voted for Obama in 2012. Instead of awarding all of the state?s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate getting the most votes in each of these states, under the proposed plans most of the Electoral College votes would be awarded to the winner in each congressional district?and thanks to Republican gerrymandering of those districts, such a scheme would be a windfall for Republicans.

This plan would be deeply concerning if Republicans were really going to enact it. But the same self-interest that is leading Republicans to consider this move is also going to lead most of them to abandon it almost everywhere. The Great Democratic Freak-out is unjustified. But it is not without its usefulness, because it reminds wavering Republicans what they will face if they go down the road of unilateral Electoral College reform.

?Let?s start with the basics. In just about every U.S. election, the candidate who gets the most votes in the general election wins. Presidential elections are, of course, different: Each state gets assigned a number of Electoral College votes equal to the number of representatives and senators from that state. Besides two senators, the number of representatives depends on population, with more populous states getting more members of Congress.

The U.S. Constitution?s Article II gives each state?s legislature the power to set the rules for choosing electors. In most states, the legislature has put in place a rule to give all of the state?s Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate getting the most votes statewide. In Maine and Nebraska, they assign two of their votes to the statewide winner, and the rest by district?the same kind of arrangement under consideration by this new wave of Republican-dominated states.

Article II gives the legislature very broad power to pick the rules for choosing presidential electors. These bodies could even take the right away from the voters and allocate the state?s Electoral College votes itself?something the Supreme Court reaffirmed in its controversial Bush v. Gore decision in 2000. So despite all the talk of Republicans ?rigging? the system by possibly changing these rules, there?s nothing unconstitutional about switching to this method of choosing presidential electors. (In fact, a number of Democratic state legislatures, including California, have adopted the National Popular Vote plan, which would pledge all the participating states? electors to the presidential candidate getting the most votes nationwide once enough other states adopt it.)

What?s going to stop these changes to the electoral system is not law, but politics. Republicans have a lot to lose by going down this road, which is why Florida?s legislative leaders have already balked at it. It?s also why you don?t see Republican legislatures simply reallocating Electoral College votes to themselves.

First, it is wrong to assume, as the right?s National Review and the left?s Think Progress have, that Mitt Romney would have won had this rule been in place. As Donald Rumsfeld might say, you go into a campaign with the Electoral College rules you have, not the rules you wish them to be. The Obama and Romney campaigns would have campaigned very differently in these states if they were under a district system, targeting not voters across the state, but voters in the key districts needed to win the election. Yes, Republican gerrymandering of districts would have given the GOP some advantage, but it is far from clear it would have been enough to defeat the Obama campaign machine.

Think about it: The last thing Republican legislators want is national Democratic campaigns scrounging for every vote in conservative-leaning districts. Fewer Republicans will win legislative and Congressional seats because Republican districts will become more competitive by design. Why would Republican legislators vote for a plan that will make it harder for them to keep their jobs?

Further, adopting such a system immediately turns a battleground state into a less important state. If all that?s up for grabs in Ohio are the three or four marginal Electoral College votes, then the presidential campaigns pay less attention to Ohio, and Ohio gets fewer promises and benefits from presidential candidates coming through. Such a plan is not good for those states that cherish being crucial to presidential election outcomes?states like Virginia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

In addition, the districting plan adopted in most of the swing states is a kind of unilateral disarmament. It is a sign of defeatism, an admission that the Republican Party no longer expects to win presidential elections in the state. Giving up on capturing a state?s full complement of Electoral College votes will make it harder in close elections for Republican presidential candidates to put together the number of votes they need to win the election. Do Republicans really want to give up on Virginia and Wisconsin? It might make sense on these grounds for Republicans to adopt this plan in Pennsylvania, but all of the other states are just too competitive to take this risk.

And finally, there is the risk of backlash, and this is where the Democratic freak-out comes into play. Republicans seem to have overplayed their hands in the 2012 election, adopting controversial voter identification, voter registration, and early voting rules intended to make it harder for Democrats to vote. To some extent these efforts in the voting wars backfired, subjecting Republicans to public criticism and some judicial reversals, and inspiring increased Democratic turnout to the polls. If Republicans proceed with these plans, any ?rigging? or ?gaming? of the Electoral College rules will be played up the same way by Democrats: Republicans can?t win fair and square, so they have to manipulate the rules.

We will soon learn whether rational Republicans will put the brakes on Electoral College reform. The Washington Post says the Virginia Legislature is considering changing the rules as early as next week. The Department of Justice could move to block the plan under the Voting Rights Act, but that path is uncertain. Regardless, the Great Democratic Freak-out makes the attempt to rejigger the rules much more costly, and if it does occur, the so-called reform could be self-defeating. Indeed, years from now Virginia?s Republican legislators may remember that day as the day they first began to return the state house back to the Democrats. And a Democratic state Legislature would probably reverse the rules anyway.

Naked Man Poops, Goes On Rampage Inside SW Florida Home ...

MIAMI (CBSMiami) ? A southwest Florida man was arrested after he reportedly jumped off the roof of a couple?s North Ft. Myers home, knocked one person over and then went on a rampage inside the residence.

Oh, he was naked at the time.

The homeowners told Lee County sheriff?s deputies that just before 7 p.m. they heard noises on the roof and went outside to see what was going on. That?s when they spotted a nude Gregory Bruni, 21, from Venice on the roof, according to the News-Press.

Bruni jumped off the roof and knocked over one of the victims. He then reportedly ran inside the house and tore a 72 inch flat screen TV off a living room wall.

As the man yelled to his wife to get his gun, Bruni continued to trash the house. The sheriff?s office said the man?s wife managed to fire three shots at Bruni, but missed.

As the man went to get another gun, Bruni allegedly fell to the floor in the living room and started masturbating. He then ran into the couple?s son?s room and rubbed the boy?s clothing over his face.

When deputies arrived, the sheriff?s office said Bruni fell to the ground, flailed around and spoke ? but was not making any sense.

Bruni tried to get away from the deputies several times. In the end, they had to use a Taser on him to take him into custody.

Investigators later discovered that Bruni defecated near the front door and in a hallway inside the residence.

Bruni was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital and put under observation while doctors tried to figure out what he was on.

The News-Press in Ft. Myers contributed to this report.

Where's the growth? Euro zone still lacks investor appeal

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Encouraged by the euro zone's resilience last year in the face of severe doubts about its survival, some outside investors have snapped up assets in the strongest corners of the region.

Yet even the most enthusiastic euro proponent would concede there's plenty more to do to strengthen the currency bloc. Fundamentally, there's a need for economic growth to start to revive for many investors to risk a more decisive push into bonds, equities or more tangible assets in a swathe of crisis-hit countries.

"After last year, one should consider that the likely outcome for Europe in the next decade is 1 percent annual growth," said Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan CEO Jim Leech, who is not planning to venture into Europe's "wine-belt" countries such as Spain and Italy for investments.

"It's going to take a long time to mend itself. One has to look (instead) at emerging markets," added Leech, whose fund is looking to open an office in Hong Kong and hopes to team up with local players for large China transactions.

Go back a year and the prospect of a disorderly Greek exit, leading to the euro's possible implosion, was the central subject of debates between bankers, investors and policymakers meeting in Davos for the annual World Economic Forum.

Twelve months on, the euro is still standing and has regained ground against the dollar and the Swiss franc, after European Central Bank head Mario Draghi showed in the summer he was determined to prevent a breakup of the 17-nation currency.

"The single biggest factor that has contributed to changing the investment outlook is obviously Mario Draghi and the stance of the ECB," said David Novak, a partner with Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, one of the oldest U.S. private equity firms.

"Knowing that a backstop is there has led to a level of stability in the market," said Novak, whose firm acquired a significant interest in British discount retailer B&M last year.

Novak, who expects 2013 to be a transition year for Europe, said his firm would continue to look for investments in businesses with strong exports located in Britain and northern Europe. But more evidence of long-term stability was needed to make deals in southern Europe attractive, he added.

AUSTERITY

The ECB's pledge to buy unlimited quantities of bonds of weaker nations has led to the near-halving of Italian and Spanish borrowing costs from their euro crisis peaks, with some fund managers dipping back into hard-hit sovereign bonds after months of absence.

Herbert Scheidt, chairman of Swiss private bank Vontobel, said Draghi's action had been a potent antidote to the bets many hedge funds had been placing on the collapse of the euro and was a stabilizing factor in the market.

But the prospect of prolonged, austerity-led stagnation in the region is making assets in places like Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Greece still unpalatable for many long-term overseas investors.

Bankers and investors agree these countries need to continue to push through painful labor and welfare reforms to improve the region's competitiveness.

But some are skeptical about politicians' ability to use the breathing space the ECB has offered them to lead a return to a path of growth, with many saying economic retrenchment in these countries looked too aggressive.

"Even if Greek bonds might have generated 80 pct for you last year, it didn't change anything on the unemployment front where 50 percent of young people are unemployed," said Alexander Bazarov, a member of the management board and vice president of Sberbank , Russia's biggest bank.

"I don't see any major appetite among Russian businessmen for investing in the European Union. An hotel here and there. But there are no major, mainstream deals," Bazarov said.

While some investors, especially in North America, are wary of moving back decisively into Europe, others will be well aware that fortune can favor the brave.

LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE

Davide Serra, a founder of hedge fund Algebris, is placing his bets on being long in 2013 on bank and insurance stocks, much shunned by investors over the past five years of crisis.

And some cash-rich players from Asia and the Gulf with a longer-term perspective have been actively looking for bargains in what remains one of the richest regions of the world.

These investors are shunning bonds and equities and rather looking to snap up quality companies at attractive prices.

"We see opportunities both in Europe and the United States. Despite the crisis these are the most developed, most trusted and most liquid markets of the world," said Scott Freidheim, Europe CEO of Investecorp, a manager of alternative assets for Gulf investors.

"We don't dismiss the headwinds that Europe still faces, but it creates opportunities," said Freidheim, who bought Spain's Esmolglass in the summer and is targeting other private companies with a strong exposure to export markets.

Even though many European companies are on average worth around the half of levels seen before the subprime crisis, some of these investors say the best buying opportunities may already be over.

"Opportunities are everywhere in Europe, but at the end of the day it has to be priced right," said Chen Feng, chairman of Hainan Airlines Group , which bought 48 percent of French airline Aigle Azur in October.

"If you can't agree on the price, the deal is not going to happen, no matter what the economic situation is like ... If somebody thinks that everything is fine now and wants to price higher than what the market can pay, then obviously there's going to be no deal."

So far then it's mainly the most risk-tolerant buyers who have bought into euro zone assets. For everyone else, there has to be a clearer sign that economic growth is returning before they open their wallets.

"I think we are on the way up," said Charles Dallara, Managing Director at the Institute of International Finance. "But if we do not pick up the slack in the real economy, then the market will turn."

New 2-D material for next generation high-speed electronics

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at CSIRO and RMIT University have produced a new two-dimensional material that could revolutionise the electronics market, making "nano" more than just a marketing term.

The material -- made up of layers of crystal known as molybdenum oxides -- has unique properties that encourage the free flow of electrons at ultra-high speeds.

In a paper published in the January issue of materials science journal Advanced Materials, the researchers explain how they adapted a revolutionary material known as graphene to create a new conductive nano-material.

Graphene was created in 2004 by scientists in the UK and won its inventors a Nobel Prize in 2010. While graphene supports high speed electrons, its physical properties prevent it from being used for high-speed electronics.

The CSIRO's Dr Serge Zhuiykov said the new nano-material was made up of layered sheets -- similar to graphite layers that make up a pencil's core.

"Within these layers, electrons are able to zip through at high speeds with minimal scattering," Dr Zhuiykov said.

"The importance of our breakthrough is how quickly and fluently electrons -- which conduct electricity -- are able to flow through the new material."

RMIT's Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh said the researchers were able to remove "road blocks" that could obstruct the electrons, an essential step for the development of high-speed electronics.

"Instead of scattering when they hit road blocks, as they would in conventional materials, they can simply pass through this new material and get through the structure faster," Professor Kalantar-zadeh said.

"Quite simply, if electrons can pass through a structure quicker, we can build devices that are smaller and transfer data at much higher speeds.

"While more work needs to be done before we can develop actual gadgets using this new 2D nano-material, this breakthrough lays the foundation for a new electronics revolution and we look forward to exploring its potential."

In the paper titled 'Enhanced Charge Carrier Mobility in Two-Dimensional High Dielectric Molybdenum Oxide,' the researchers describe how they used a process known as "exfoliation" to create layers of the material ~11 nm thick.

The material was manipulated to convert it into a semiconductor and nanoscale transistors were then created using molybdenum oxide.

The result was electron mobility values of >1,100 cm2/Vs -- exceeding the current industry standard for low dimensional silicon.

The work, with RMIT doctoral researcher Sivacarendran Balendhran as the lead author, was supported by the CSIRO Sensors and Sensor Networks Transformational Capability Platform and the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering Division.

It was also a result of collaboration between researchers from Monash University, University of California -- Los Angeles (UCLA), CSIRO, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and RMIT.

94% The Sessions

All Critics (175) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (166) | Rotten (10) | DVD (1)

Thanks to Lewin's light but assured touch, The Sessions never wears its theological preoccupations heavily, instead allowing transcendence to creep up on the audience quietly.

A very different kind of love story, breaking taboos lightly, with sensitivity and humor.

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

(... ) a remarkable film about disability, incapacity and the joy of freedom in the most impossible of situations.

This funny, moving, beautifully acted movie avoids numerous pitfalls.

Satisfaction guaranteed? Pretty much.

It's Hawkes's portrayal, in all its wit, intelligence and childlike naivety, that really captures the heart.

By taking a sensitive, honest approach to this true story, breakthrough filmmaker Lewin both avoids sentimentality and keeps the focus on the inner lives of the central characters.

It's a brave performance from Hunt, who spends much of the film entirely naked. Both her and Hawkes are brilliant in a movie that is a massively uplifting experience.

The movie becomes a touching, often funny portrayal of sex as a form of kindness and human contact.

Hunt is a prodigy. No other actress could have brought such easeful transparency, such a glow of givingness, such heedlessness of glamour each time she strips naked.

Not only does it deal with sex in a straightforward manner, but it also deals with the equally sensitive themes of disability and religion, all of which writer/director Ben Lewin pulls off skilfully.

The Sessions can be sugary, but it's likable.

You could maybe see it working as a play, though the tactile detail of these scenes needs close-ups on the actors' faces to communicate what the transaction means to them both.

It's tender, humane and funny and superbly acted; a simple but affecting parable about experiencing life to the fullest.

Three days after viewing, the film's questioning generosity and sense of perspective will still be knocking around your head.

The Sessions finally proves that Hollywood can take physical incapacity and/or sex far more seriously than it does the potential side effects of shooting so many people on screen so often.

A touching gem of a movie largely thanks to subtly dynamic performances from Helen Hunt and John Hawkes.

Hugely enjoyable, warm-hearted and frequently laugh-out-loud funny disability drama with a superb script and a pair of terrific performances from John Hawkes and Helen Hunt.

Lewin, who has fought his own lifelong polio battle, handles tricky material with a gentle, empathetic touch.

Formulaic but uplifting, positive and accessible.

In its barest form this is a traditional rites-of-passage yarn, dealing in first love and lost innocence, and even with a candid discussion of sex, it's mostly sweetness and light.

Few movies are so frank about the sexual mechanics of the disabled ...

We?re quite a ways off from learning anything significant about Samsung?s next Galaxy S release, but some interesting new scoops about the next iteration of Samsung?s flagship smartphone is that it will have an ?octa-core? Exynos running the system.

We forgot that. We missed that. And the list goes on.

On a brand new home inspection, you would think that there would be very few things to find when inspecting for the buyers.

Not so in this case. Desert Sun Home Inspections has a challenging time when inspecting a newly constructed home.

Many times there is no one there to answer all the questions about the home. In this case the actual builder was there.

I would ask a question about an "issue" and he would say "We missed that" or he would say We forgot that".

When building a new home, you cannot do just that. Miss things or forget things.

Here are two examples of why you don't just miss things or forget things.

Here we have a missing dryer vent hood. i did find the hood inside by the water heater. It was broken and in disrepair. I told the builder to replace the unit with a single flapper type of hood.

Missing dryer hood.

Here we have a beam across the front entry way that was not finished out. The ends of the beam are open and will let the insects get in.

"We Must have missed that".

Beam not finished.

Beam not finished.

Attention to detail is what home building is all about. I hate being the bearer of bad news for anyone. Even the buyers who think the new home should be in perfect shape when I inspect it.

Have a great day everyone.
